Executive Conference Focuses On Energy, Raw Materials
The 2008 Foundry Executive Conference will be held September 21-23 at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino, Incline Village, Nev. This annual summit of industry leadership will feature presentations on:
- Slimming Down with Lean Manufacturing, Chip Long, World Class Consulting Group;
- U.S. Scrap & Alloy Markets: A Status Report for Metalcasters, Jason Redden, Omnisource Corp.;
- Going Green in Metalcasting, Jim Schifo, Keramida Environmental, Inc.
The special events at this conference include golf and tennis tournaments and a three-hour Lake Tahoe Cruise aboard the Tahoe Queen.

Free Webinars to Focus on Raw Material Pricing Trends, Reducing Costs
AFS is producing a series of raw materials webinars scheduled for Aug. 20-21. These webinars are intended to educate on the many ways ferrous and nonferrous raw material pricing is affecting metalcasting facilities. Dates, times and topics include:
- August 20 at 10:00 a.m. CST - "Ferrous Pricing Trends," Eugene Muratore, Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium America;
- August 20 at 2:00 p.m. CST - "Nonferrous Pricing Trends," Walt Chaput, Omnisource;
- August 21 at 10:00 a.m. CST - "Reducing Costs at a Ferrous Facility," Harvey Fyke, Caterpillar, "Reducing Costs at a Nonferrous Facility," Dan Groteke, Q.C. Designs, Inc.
- August 21 at 2:00 p.m. CST - "U.S. Pricing Trends - What Washington is Doing to Regulate Scrap Prices," and "How and Why International Scrap Pricing Affects Domestic Prices," representatives from the American Scrap Coalition.

Participate in Survey on Gating Practices, Needs
The AFS Aluminum Division's Gating and Risering Committee 2H is gathering information about gating practices and needs. This information will be used to initiate research and other projects related to the gating and risering of aluminum sand castings. Survey respondents will be provided a comprehensive listing of responses after the survey is complete.

Melt Control of Nickel, Cobalt and Stainless Steel Course Coming
CMI will be offering a Melt Control of Nickel, Cobalt and Stainless Steel course Oct. 7-8 at AFS Headquarters, Schaumburg, Ill. This operations-oriented course covers the metallurgy of nickel, cobalt and stainless steels. It also emphasizes the proper melting, pouring and sequencing of these alloys. Other information on welding, heat treatment and melt-related defect analysis is included during two days of intensive instruction.

CMI Offers Ferrous Gating and Riser Design Course
CMI will be offering a Gating and Riser Design - Ferrous course Oct. 7-10 at Muskegon Community College, Muskegon, Wis. Gating and riser design for ferrous casting alloys includes information for gray, ductile, malleable, white alloyed irons and carbon, low and high alloy steels.
Metal flow, turbulence, solidification, heat transfer, shrinkage, metallostatic pressure effects, gating system and riser design, mold wall movement and computer modeling will be discussed. Riser size and gating system calculations, pouring times, placement and feeding distance of risers are important discussion topics in this course.

Internet Course Educates on Sand, Molding Technologies
CMI will be offering a Sand & Molding Technology internet course Oct. 7-Jan. 24 in conjunction with Mohawk College, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In this course students will gain a thorough understanding of the types of sand used in metalcasting facilities, and the procedures for mixing & molding sands. Green sand and shell sand, along with other chemically bonded methods for producing molds and cores will be examined. Students also will be able to select suitable methods for producing and testing cores.
