AFS Corporate Member Receives Business Award
In February, AFS Corporate Member Norwood Foundry Ltd., Nisku, Alberta, Canada, won the Alberta Business Award of Distinction for Health and Safety Innovation. The award was presented at the Alberta Business Awards of Distinction gala in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Norwood was honored for its carbon monoxide elimination ventilation system. Norwood developed the system after finding that samples of the air quality taken from worker breathing zones frequently exceeded the allowable limits of carbon monoxide.

Exhibit/Attend the Metalcasting Solutions Seminar in April
The AFS Metalcasting Solutions seminar will be held April 24, 2008, at the Hilton Garden Inn-Chicago O'Hare Airport, Des Plaines, Ill. The focus of this seminar is to bring together metalcasters with casting buyers and designers to discuss the casting processes, review the various alloy families, see casting design successes and learn about technological advancements in metalcasting. If you are a buyer, attend this workshop to learn more about what metalcasting can do for you. If you are a metalcaster, show buyers what you can do.

IJMC Includes Modification of Al-Si Alloys, Endurance of DI
The third issue of the International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC) will be released April 2008. This issue will feature four papers and a technical communication, including a follow-up work by Geoffrey Sigworth, Alcoa Primary Metals, "The Modification of Al-Si Casting Alloys: Important Practical and Theoretical Aspects." This paper builds upon his first fundamental work discussing grain refinement. A second paper, "Comparative Study Evaluation of Fatigue Endurance Limit of 4-and 6-mm Thin Wall Ductile Iron," by C. Labrecque, M. Gagne & P. Cabanne, Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium, and C. Francois, C. Becret and F. Hoffmann, PSA Peugeot Citroen, describes the practical approach taken and important mechanical properties developed to obtain light weight ductile iron components for demanding and safety critical automobile suspension applications.

Don't delay, subscribe now to receive the publication leading the transfer of research and technology to the global metalcasting industry. For more information on the IJMC, and to download a subscription form, visit www.metalcastingjournal.com or contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237.

CMI Offers Gating and Riser Design Course
CMI will be offering a Gating and Riser Design - Ferrous course May 6-9 at Mohawk College, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Gating and riser design for ferrous casting alloys includes information for gray, ductile, malleable, white alloyed irons and carbon, low and high-alloy steels.

Metal flow, turbulence, solidification, heat transfer, shrinkage, metallostatic pressure effects, gating system and riser design, mold-wall movement and computer modeling, riser size and gating system calculations, pouring times, placement and feeding distance of risers are important discussion topics in this course.

For more information, or to attend this course, contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237, or click here to register.

Direct Arc Furnace Operations Course Available
CMI will be offering a Direct Arc Furnace Operations course May 6-7 at AFS/CMI headquarters, Schaumburg, Ill. This workshop covers all phases of direct arc melting of steel alloys.  Furnace design, process enhancements, equipment advances and refractories are reviewed in detail.  Environmental considerations impacting direct arc furnace operations are featured during the program.
