Twelve Plants Earn Top Millionaires Safety Award
AFS has announced the winners of the 2007 Millionaires Safety Award. This annual award recognizes facilities that reach million marks of consecutive man-hours worked without incurring an occupational injury or illness that results in days away from work or death. To be considered for the award, facilities must be AFS corporate members.

The 2007 winners include:

  • Grede Foundries, Inc, Greenwood, S.C., 6 million man-hours;
  • John Deere Foundry, Waterloo, Iowa, 5 million man-hours;
  • Nemak Tennessee, Dickson, Tenn., 3 million man-hours;
  • Union Foundry Co., Anniston, Ala., 2 million man-hours;
  • Intermet Corp./New River Foundry, Radford, Va., 2 million man-hours;
  • Tyler Pipe Co., Tyler, Texas, 1 million man-hours;
  • Intermet Corp./Archer Creek Foundry, Lynchburg, Va., 1 million man-hours;
  • Lufkin Industries, Inc. Foundry Division, Lufkin, Texas, 1 million man-hours;
  • Grede Foundries, Inc./St. Cloud Foundry, St. Cloud, Minn., 1 million man-hours;
  • Tyco Fire & Building Products-Anniston Plant, Anniston, Ala., 1 million man-hours;
  • Americast Technologies, Inc./Amite Foundry & Machine, Amite, La., 1 million man-hours;
  • Ward Manufacturing, LLC, Blossburg, Penn., 1 million man-hours.

The Millionaires Safety Awards will be presented at the Metalcasting Congress President’s Luncheon, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20 at CastExpo'08 in Atlanta. For more information, contact Fred Kohloff, AFS Director of Environmental, Health & Safety, at 800/537-4237 or fhk@afsinc.org.

IJMC Includes Modification of Al-Si Alloys, Endurance of DI
The third issue of the International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC) will be released April 2008. This issue will feature four papers and a technical communication, including a follow-up work by Geoffrey Sigworth, Alcoa Primary Metals, “The Modification of Al-Si Casting Alloys: Important Practical and Theoretical Aspects.” This paper builds upon his first fundamental work discussing grain refinement. A second paper, “Comparative Study Evaluation of Fatigue Endurance Limit of 4-and 6-mm Thin Wall Ductile Iron,” by C. Labrecque, M. Gagne & P. Cabanne, Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium, and C. Francois, C. Becret and F. Hoffmann, PSA Peugeot Citroen, describes the practical approach taken and important mechanical properties developed to obtain light weight ductile iron components for safety critical automobile suspension applications.

Don't delay, subscribe now to receive the publication leading the transfer of research and technology to the global metalcasting industry. For more information on the IJMC, and to download a subscription form, visit www.metalcastingjournal.com or contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237.

New MSDS Forms Available for Magnesium Alloy Castings
AFS has completed the update of the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for magnesium alloy castings to follow the new American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 16-part format.

The new forms will help metalcasters meet their ISO certification requirements by ensuring that all of their records are current. The 16-part ANSI format includes necessary fields, such as product and company information, hazard identification, composition/information on ingredients, first aid measures, fire and explosion data, accidental release measures, handling and storage, exposure controls, personal protection, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicological and ecological information, disposal considerations, and transportation and regulatory information.

For more information on the new MSDS format, contact Fred Kohloff, AFS Director of Environmental, Health & Safety, at 800/537-4237 or fhk@afsinc.org. To purchase new forms, contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237, or visit the AFS estore at www.afsinc.org/estore.

Attend the Northwest Regional Conference in March
The 2008 Northwest Regional Conference will be held March 13-15 at the Hilton Tower Downtown, Portland, Ore.

Fifteen speakers from world-class organizations will be included in this year's program, covering topics such as "Challenges of a Green Field Foundry in China," Percy Chang, ESCO, "Global Competition, the Economic Outlook," Ray Monroe, Steel Founders' Society of America, "U.S. Metalcasting: Competing in a Global Marketplace," Alfred Spada, Editor/Publisher MODERN CASTING and Engineered Casting Solutions magazines, AFS director of marketing, pr and communications, "Changing Chemical Analysis of Steel Scrap That is Used in Iron and Steel Foundries," Eugene Muratore, Rio Tinto Iron and Titanium America and more.

A past-chairman’s dinner, Saturday night banquet and tours of Dependable Patterns Works, Evraz Oregon Steel Mills and Columbia Steel also are scheduled. For more information on this conference, visit www.afsoregon.com/afsregional or contact Beth Knipple at 503/226-6506 or beth@bridgetowncores.com.

Participate in the CMI Chapter Course Competition
CMI is currently holding a competition for AFS Chapters that co-sponsor CMI courses. The chapter with the highest attendance from within their chapter area will win $1,000 and three complimentary course registration certificates. Second place will receive $500 and two course certificates and third place receives $250 and one course certificate. To qualify for the competition, the chapter must have at least 10 attendees. The contest will end in June, and entries must be submitted at that time.

For more information, including course schedules and locations, visit the CMI website at www.castmetals.com, or contact Jennifer Head, CMI special projects and course coordinator, at 800/537-4237 or jhead@afsinc.org.

CMI Offers Induction Melted Cast Iron Processing Course
CMI will be offering an Induction Melted Cast Iron Processing course April 22-23 at Bradley Univ., Peoria, Ill. Practical instruction on induction melting with special emphasis on melting procedures will be highlighted.  A review and description of equipment design features and electrical circuitry for an induction furnace, metal-slag, metal-metal and metal-refractory interactions, along with refractory selection, installation and maintenance will be considered.
